Labor Day/Pioneer Day 07

We went on a road trip this year for Labor Day. Wow, what a road trip. We finally decided to go to a place called, Martin's Cove. It is a historical site in Wyoming that preserves the site where a Mormon Pioneer handcart company got stuck in a blizzard in 1856. The reason this particular site is so special to me and my family is that I had ancestors in that handcart company. Actually there were two companies that got stuck on the Wyoming prarie at that same time. The Martin and Willie companies. I have ancestors in both companies.
We left on Sunday afternoon and drove 5 hours to Rawlins Wyoming. Yes, it felt like being in a different country. This place is in the 'middle' of the 'middle of nowhere'. Finding a place to eat in Rawlins Sunday evening was fun and we ended up at a place called, Penny's Diner. We enjoyed our chicken fried steak.
Monday morning we got up and drove the rest of the way to Martin's Cove. It was another hour to the site. I have created a page with all the pics HERE . More of the story is written along with the pics.
Monday evening we drove home, ate at Popeyes fried chicken in Rock Springs Wyo, and found out that Wyoming is the least populated state in the entire United States. Yah, just take a drive through the back roads of Wyoming and you'll see first hand. I just thank God we weren't driving through the state in the middle of the winter like my ancestors did 151 years ago.
