What I Want to Be When I Grow Up

I saw this little video on Kottke.org today. It is about a Master Bladesmith. It is fascinating. It made me want to do this. I have a deep desire to "create" things. Right now it is software in my life but it is hard to have something to show for it. A knife like this could last for generations. Awesome.

That's an amazing video. Thanks for sharing.

We were actually in Sur la Table buying knives a few months ago and the Kramer knives (even the 'retail' line) had glowing recommendations from the staff.

On my mission, I spent a few hours one P-day trying to make a "knife" in an old-school blacksmith shop in a small Guatemala town. Due to time and skill constraints, we cheated quite a bit and still came up with a "blade" that is very sub-par. It was a cool experience and I'd love to try again. It gave me huge respect for the difficulty of actually making a blade.

Once you grow up and become a bladesmith, let me know and I'll come hire you to make something for me. ;)
